Plebeians-

Daily Life-

Plebians were most commonly farmers. Like most Roman male citizens, they could vote, but they couldn't hold important government positions.

Plebeians often lived in 3 or 4-story houses called insulae. It was so crowded in the insulae and there were no bathrooms so they used a pot. They ate food such as corse bread and pea or bean soup.

What were their rights?-

Plebeians were often excluded from the Senate and other public offices, except for the military tribune. After the plebeians refused to fight in the military they decided to give them laws. Eventually, plebeians were allowed to elect their own government officials. They elected "tribunes" and they fought for the plebeians rights. As time went on plebeians were allowed to be elected to the Senate and even be consuls.

Housing-

Plebeians lived in houses called flats. For the few who owned businesses, this apartment would be above the business. Not very many plebeians lived in flats. If you lived in a tenement, you were not as lucky. Tenements where often super small, and did not have running water. People would have to get water from the local fountain and there would be no toilets. They would have to use public bathrooms. Rooms would be so crowed, there would be up to 15 to 20 people and would often cause fires, diseases, and epidemics.

Men & Women-

Just like the patricians, women were not considered plebeians. Women would fall in the class of property. Her husband owned her. Women did not receive a great education either.

Jobs-

The plebeians had horrible and hard jobs. Their jobs included farming, manufacturing, bakers, butchers, and they could also serve in the army.
